Tyre Safety Month
Stay Safe. Stay Roadworthy.
Every October, Tyre Safety Month reminds drivers just how vital tyres are for road safety. Your tyres are the only contact between your vehicle and the road, and their condition can be the difference between a safe journey and a serious accident.
This year’s campaign highlights the importance of regular tyre checks to keep you, your passengers, and other road users safe.
Why Tyre Safety Matters
- Stopping distance – Worn or underinflated tyres increase braking distance, especially in wet conditions.
- Fuel efficiency – Correctly inflated tyres reduce rolling resistance, helping you save fuel and cut emissions.
- Legal compliance – Driving with illegal or defective tyres can lead to fines of up to £2,500 per tyre and penalty points.
- Peace of mind – Knowing your tyres are safe gives you confidence every time you drive.
Quick Tyre Safety Checks You Can Do
- Tread depth
- The UK legal minimum tread depth is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre.
- Use a 20p coin test: place the coin in the tread grooves—if you can see the outer band, your tyres need replacing.
- Tyre pressure
- Check pressures at least once a month and before long journeys.
- Use your vehicle handbook or inside the fuel cap/driver’s door for the correct settings.
- Tyre condition
- Look for cuts, bulges, or objects lodged in the tread.
- Replace any tyre showing signs of damage immediately.
